Fatal Burkholderia pseudomallei septicaemia.

چکیده
Melioidosis, the infection caused by the saprophytic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in south-east Asia and northern Australia [1]. Sporadic cases have been reported from the Indian subcontinent and it is an emerging infection in India [2]. A low prevalence of antibodies against melioidosis among hospitalassociated groups in Colombo had been reported in 1976 [3], as well as a report of melioidosis abscess after travel to Sri Lanka in 1999 [4]. Septicaemic melioidosis represents the most severe form of this infection, with a high mortality. We report here the first laboratory confirmed patient with Burkholderia pseudomallei infection in Sri Lanka, who had septicaemic melioidosis leading to multi-organ dysfunction.

Facile construction of unmarked deletion mutants in Burkholderia pseudomallei using sacB counter-selection in sucrose-resistant and sucrose-sensitive isolates.
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a potentially fatal disease endemic or emerging world-wide. Here we report unmarked allele-replacement mutagenesis using efficient sacB counter-selection. Despite being genotypically sacB(+), most commonly used B. pseudomallei strains are sucrose-resistant and efficient sacB counter-selection is demonstrated in both resistant and ...
متن کاملFatal acute melioidosis in a tourist returning from Martinique Island, November 2010.
We report the fatal case of acute melioidosis in a patient returning from Martinique with fever in November 2010. Gram-negative rods were isolated from a blood culture and Burkholderia pseudomallei identified within 24 hours after first medical contact. The patient died two days after admission to hospital despite intravenous therapy with high doses of imipenem/cilastatin and intensive care. Cl...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Burkholderia pseudomallei Strain 350105, Isolated in Hainan, China, in 1976
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the etiological agent of the potentially fatal disease melioidosis. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of a virulent water isolate obtained from the Hainan Province of China in 1976, B. pseudomallei strain 350105.
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequence of the Encephalomyelitic Burkholderia pseudomallei Strain MSHR305
We describe the complete genome sequence of Burkholderia pseudomallei MSHR305, a clinical isolate taken from a fatal encephalomyelitis case, a rare form of melioidosis. This sequence will be used for comparisons to identify the genes that are involved in neurological cases.
متن کاملInfluence of Biochemical Features of Burkholderia pseudomallei Strains on Identification Reliability by Vitek 2 System
Background Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative saprophytic soil bacterium that causes melioidosis, a potentially fatal disease endemic in wet tropical areas. The currently available biochemical identification systems can misidentify some strains of B. pseudomallei. The aim of the present study was to identify the biochemical features of B. pseudomallei, which can affect its correct ide...
